Phil Harris takes second IKF Grand National win in two days for T Karts

Phil Harris takes second IKF Grand National win in two days for T Karts.

Following a win by seven seconds on Thursday, Phil Harris gave T Karts/Precision Performance Karting their second Duffy of this year’s IKF Grand Nationals at Eagles Canyon in Decatur, TX. Winning by 0.03 seconds in the CIK/Sprint Yamaha KT100 Limited Heavy class, Harris showed that the versatile T Karts chassis could win in both light and heavy.

In 2008, T Karts, LLC announced the formation of a strategic alliance with Houston, TX based race shop Precision Performance Karting, for the development of an asphalt version of T Karts’ successful T2 model. Two prototype T2 of slightly varying designs have been constructed and shipped to the shop of PPK Racing, where they will be prepared for competition by team owner Frank Newsom. The prototypes feature the proprietary T2 seat mounting system, double adjustable camber/castor pills, and three aluminum torsion bars. The chassis delivered to PPK were constructed to accept the engine mounted on the left side of the chassis per the specific requirements of the team, and T Karts plans to test both left and right side engine arrangements. The prototype karts will be fitted with PPK-prepared Yamaha KT-100s, axle clutches, and front Hagar disk brakes. PPK plans their first test on Friday, March 28, with team driver Oscar Moran at the wheel.

Precision Performance Karting was established in 1982 as a full-time kart shop/store for which it remains to this day as a karts only operation. Frank Newsom recalls, “The interest in the sport of kart racing hails back to 1959, early 1960 when Dad built the first organized, designed, purpose built race sprint track, the old Airline Kart Raceway. I was practically in diapers at the time. A dozen or so combined Duffys, Triads and a couple of Tulsa Shoot Out wins in all categories, sprint, enduro and speedway demonstrates just how serious and committed we are.”

Precision Performance Karting evolved from the family sport of kart racing from which began in 1960. In 1982 PPK opened its doors to the public offering sales and services exclusively for karts and as then and remains to this day a full service racing kart shop. Services to include traditional clutch kart eng prep., dynamometer tuning(brake and inertia) precision crankshaft truing/rebuilding and general shop services and tig welding. Our shop specializes in the traditional clutch karts,non-gearbox, karts as this allows us to focus and indeed concentrate our endeavors in a limited area of expertise thus ever increasing our skill and knowledge for the ulitimate goal of winning races.

T Karts, LLC was formed in 2004 to manufacture karts and service a nationwide network of backyard kart tracks, all using a common set of preparation rules. T Karts has seen rapid growth in the number of compliant tracks in the past year and expects growth to accelerate further in 2008. T Karts and GrassPass hosts Kartstock, the Backyard Karting National Championship event, at which a Backyard Karting National Champion is crowned.

Oscar Moran completes successful season in prototype T Kart, finishing second in points in the SWRA KT100 Ltd Lite Class.

T Karts and Precision Performance Karting congratulate Oscar Moran on the second place finish in points in the Southwest Roadrace Association, Yamaha KT100 Ltd Lite class driving the PPK prepared T2.1 asphalt prototype. Despite being without power as a result of the hurricanes that battered the Gulf Coast, team principal Frank Newsom was able to successfully prepare and campaign the kart in the 8 race series. T Karts designer, Trevor Hilliar, and Precision Performance Karting owner and engine builder, Frank Newsom, agree that the first design was very strong out of the box, and the team are looking to evolve the chassis in the off season, tooling up for production of a customer model. A thorough blog with lots of great team pictures of the yellow #22 T Kart and drivers is HERE

Three Pavement Events Appear on GrassPass Schedule

Three Pavement Events on GrassPass Schedule.
T Karts will promote three events during the 2008 season that will be run on paved road courses, and in one case a clay oval as well. Following a successful T Karts pavement test in January at Moroso Raceway Park in Florida, the decision was made to add several pavement dates to the traditionally dirt GrassPass racing schedule. The first event will be a series of sprint races at the Rocky Ridge Raceway in Barre, VT on June 7th. This tight paved road course suits the GrassPass formula well, and can be seen at www.vtshifterkarts The third paved event of the season will be held at Rocky Ridge as well on August 2nd.

On June 29, T Karts will run a history making double race at Oakland Valley Raceway Park in Cuddybackville, NY. In a first of it's kind, the T Karts Super Enduro will be two events in one. During the day, teams of 2 drivers will run a 4-hour endurance road race on one of the finest paved kart tracks in the East. At night, the same teams will race the same karts in a 500 lap race on the OVRP dirt oval. Results of the two events will be merged to produce a single winning team. Transponder timing by AMB will be provided to all competitors.

All competitors will be required to run the new GrassPass spec asphalt tire, the Maxxis Raptor for the paved events, and will be able to switch to the HG3 for the dirt events. The Raptor tire has proved itself to be long lasting and a great equalizer. If well maintained, one set should last several seasons of pavement racing. More information about the events is available at www.grasspass.org

Team T Karts second in 2008 24 Hours of America by a 29 second margin.

Team T Karts of Essex, Connecticut finished 2nd in the second annual 24-Hours of America, held on January 12-13, 2008 at the Moroso Motorsports Park in West Palm Beach, Florida. At the conclusion of the 24 hour endurance kart race, Team T Karts was only 29 seconds behind the race winning #18 kart of Team Xcused. Team T Karts lead for much of the first third of the race, slipping back in the late night hours during heavy rain and wet track conditions. Clean driving and solid reliability helped the #2 Team T Kart to battle back to second place, and close to within less than 30 seconds of the winning kart. Dan Burke, who was co-driver of the winning #18 kart, also drove with T Karts owner Trevor Hilliar in the 2007 Kartstock 4-hour enduro in the factory T2, finishing a strong 2nd place.

9/15/07, Winthrop, CT.

Louis Delorso won the 2007 GrassPass.Org Kartstock Backyard Karting National Championship at Lone Wolf Raceway in Winthrop, CT by .256 seconds over Junior Geer with Kevin Strain finishing third. Delorso, of Deep River, CT, started on the fourth row of the forty-lap feature after a fourth place in the qualifying race. The Coyote driver took the lead on lap 18 and held off a hard charging Junior Geer, who set a new track record in both directions on the 1/3-mile track. Track owner Kevin Strain lead early and followed closely behind before finishing third in the 25 kart field.

Twenty-two teams qualified for the 4-Hour enduro, which allowed each team the use of one backup kart. Teams from Ohio, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut took the green flag in a Le-Mans style start, with pole sitter Ryan Fraser running to his waiting T2 and leading across the line for the first lap. After four hours, with midnight approaching, the local team of Dan Rutan, Louis Delorso, Kevin Strain and Steve Bonano had completed 265 laps, or 88 miles, at an average speed of 22 miles per hour. Two laps back was the EnduranceKarting.com team of Johan Schwartz, Wayne Johnson and Todd Samuelson and third with 260 laps was Team T Karts with defending 6-hour winner Trevor Hilliar and Dan Burke behind the wheel. The team of Junior Geer and Anthony Ursini ran in the top three all night until a mechanical failure dropped them to fourth in the closing laps. All three top teams and fourteen of the twenty one karts entered were T Karts.

Andy Lally and Trevor Hilliar driving for Team T Karts Win a Star Studded 5th Annual GrassPass.Org Pro-Am

May 27,2007 Winthrop, Connecticut

Team T Karts won the 5th annual GrassPass.Org Pro-Am at Lone Wolf Raceway in Winthrop, Connecticut on Sunday, May 27. Team T Karts covered the 100 laps of the 1/3-mile track in one hour and thirty seven seconds, finishing a full lap ahead of the second place kart of Bonzo Racing, with Team Foggitt only 1.56 seconds behind in third. Professional sportscar driver Andy Lally started the race in the Team T Karts T2 from the outside pole position, next to pole sitter Ryan Fraser in his red and gold T Karts T1. Lally briefly held second place, then was passed by Lou Delorso in the number 53 Coyote chassis with the team of Dan Rutan and Wes Henderson taking the lead on the first lap. On Lap 18, Lally passed Delorso for second place and the two swapped the position several times before the driver changes. A full course yellow to water the track at mid-race gave many teams a chance to make their driver changes, and after the yellow, with a slick, but drying track, several positions changed hands as the conditions were quite muddy on the restart. By lap 65, all of the driver changes had taken place, and Hilliar had taken the lead of the race from Team Rutan with Team Bonzo taking second place and Jab Racing moved up to third. Other big movers were Team Foggitt with BMW driver Matt Connolly behind the wheel, and Team 33 with Grand Am and ALMS shoe Ryan Eversley behind the wheel. At the end of the race, Team T Karts held a full lap lead over the field, while the battle for second was the hottest race on the track, with five karts covered by a half a lap.

The GrassPass.Org Pro-Am is run annually on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, in conjunction with the Lime Rock Park round of the Grand Am series. Past events have been held at the home track of organizer Trevor Hilliar, but renovations at the Lone Wolf Circuit made it ideal for the 2007 running of the event. As Lime Rock is quiet on Sundays, some competitors racing in the Grand Am Rolex GT and Koni Challenge Series choose to spend their day off teaming up with some of the best GrassPass backyard karters and having some casual racing while watching the Indy 500, though it is rare that the action on the track is casual. Past winners of the Pro-Am have included Andy Lally (2006, 2007), Stu Hayner(2004) and Daniel Rutan (2005.)

Noteworthy participants in the 2007 Pro-Am included (finishing position): Lars Giering, engineer for Team TRG racing (2nd); Matt Connolly, owner/driver Matt Connlly Motorsports BMW M3 (3rd); Ryan Eversley, driver MCM BMW M3 (4th); Shawn Price, driver Kinetic Motorsports BMW M3 (5th); Terry Borcheller, driver Black Forest Racing Mustang GT (6th.) Past participants who could not attend include Stu Hayner, Owen Trinkler, Pete Halsmer, Claude Bourbonais, Bobby Sak, Don Sak, Jim Osbourne, Elivan Goulart, Ian Prout, Scott Bradley, Johan Schwartz and many other talented racers.

GrassPass.Org is the online home of the backyard kart racing movement, providing a portal to backyard karting resources such as rules, schedules of events, usefull resources for track owners and karters as well as busy forum section. GrassPass.Org promotes the concept of a nationwide network of private, backyard kart tracks, all racing a common formula of kart. GrassPass karts are powered by a stock Honda 6.5 horsepower engine and run Maxxis tires and full width bodywork. GrassPass is in the process of developing a package of services for backyard karters including event and facility insurance and timing technology. For more information, visit GrassPass.Org. All top three teams drove new T2s by T Karts, and none experienced any major mechanical difficulties, until the throttle cable came loose from the pedal on the leading kart of Trevor Hilliar, who was able to maintain a lead actuating the throttle by hand. Katherine Hilliar was unable to partake in the midnight victory celebrations, as her 3 month old daughter needed her more. Nineteen karts took the green flag in the longest dirt road course kart race in history.

T Karts, LLC announces the launch of entry level racing kart designed to bring racing to the masses.

T Karts, LLC Press Release For Immediate Release

October 9, 2004

T Karts, LLC announces the launch of entry level racing kart designed to bring racing to the masses.

Cleveland, OH. In an announcement Saturday, October 09 at the Hot Import Nights car show in Cleveland, Ohio, veteran racer and kart designer Trevor Hilliar revealed plans for an entry level racing kart that would revolutionize motorsports by making competition accessible to a broad segment of the population. T Karts intends to accomplish this by creating a "spec" kart designed to compete on a grassroots network of privately owned and operated dirt road courses and ovals. Production of the karts will begin immediately at T Karts’ Essex, CT facility.

"The plan is to create a nationwide network of back yard racetracks all using comparable karts," said Hilliar. "It all started when a fellow racer and I bought a few older racing karts to keep ourselves entertained and sharp in the off season. We have been racing on several dirt road courses and ovals in Connecticut for over 5 years and the growth in popularity and participation has been tremendous."

Hilliar, founder of T Karts, LLC, an Essex, CT based company, reported the successful completion of a six month long test involving several prototype karts. T Karts will begin the production of the kart in the fall of 2004, code named T1, based on the successful prototype field test. The T1 will conform to national and international rules for racing karts, allowing it to compete in a wide variety of sanctioned events. The primary design considerations for the T1 were not based on that of a top level kart racing, but rather the desire to build a safe, durable and low maintenance racing kart that could make the crossover from recreational competition to full on sanctioned competition.

"We had several requirements in mind when we set out to build the T1. First it must be a competition kart and not a recreational vehicle such as a fun kart, ATV or quad. Second, it must be affordable to buy and operate. Third, it must be safe. We feel we have hit the nail on the head with the T1," said Hilliar.

The T1 gets it drive from an ultra-reliable Honda 6.5 horsepower engine with an integral gear reduction and wet clutch. This choice of power plant ensures years of reliable service, adequate power and performance for back yard competition, and avoids one of the most expensive and high maintenance components of a competition kart, the clutch. A chain drive, mechanical brake, easily adjustable seat, and tunable chassis are all features that were essential, based on the years of backyard kart racing that Hilliar and his friends have been involved in.

"Backyard kart racing is the safest, most fun and most affordable way for racing fans and current and aspiring racers to get high quality seat time without the complications of sanctioned racing. About one-eighth of an acre, two karts, two helmets and a friend is all that it takes to go racing. There are no memberships, licenses, tow vehicles, trailers, long tows, short track sessions, expensive rebuilds, huge tire bills, unsportsmanlike competitors, inconvenient schedules, hotel rooms, race gas, and all of the other headaches that come with sanctioned racing." Hilliar speaks from experience, having competed with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and Grand Am since 1991, including competing in the Grand Am and Grand Am Cup series, the SCCA Valvoline Runoffs, the Rolex 24 at Daytona and a variety of professional Formula 2000 series.

Press Release

T Karts rolls out the last T1 as company prepares to introduce updated model for 2006.

The new kart will feature more adjustability, better handling, lower maintenance and more features at a competitive price.

Essex, CT, December 1, 2005: T Karts, llc announced that a new model would replace the T1, the world’s first purpose built backyard racing kart, for 2006 and beyond. Since May of 2004, T Karts has built fourteen of the revolutionary T1, most of which have been raced on backyard dirt kart tracks throughout the Northeast United States. By design, the T1 was a limited-production test bed for the development of a viable production backyard racing kart. Driven by Daniel Rutan, a T1 won the first annual Backyard Karting National Championship presented by GrassPass.org. The T1 will be replaced for 2006 and beyond by a new model, internally code-named the T2, which is in the prototyping stage. T Karts hopes to test the T2 prototype against a T1 within two weeks and finalize the design by year-end. No announcement has been made as to where the T2 will be built, but the design is based heavily on the race proven T1 and the new kart will retain the stock Honda GX200 engine. T Karts plans to unveil the first T2 on or before February 15, 2006 and begin shipping to customers immediately. T Karts plans to work closely with backyard track owners to promote a national backyard racing series using the GrassPass rules for kart preparation.

Maxxis Tires Named as Spec Tire of the GrassPass Backyard Karting National Series

Essex, CT: GrassPass, the promoters of the GrassPass Backyard Karting National Series, announced today that Maxxis Tires would be the official tire manufacturer for all GrassPass sanctioned backyard karting events. "We are very excited to be aligned with Maxxis, one of the world’s biggest and most respected names in kart racing tires. This strategic partnership will benefit both Maxxis and GrassPass by providing competitors nation-wide with a control tire, while raising awareness of the GrassPass concept and Maxxis brand," said Trevor Hilliar, founder of GrassPass and T Karts, LLC.

In November of 2005, Essex, Connecticut-based GrassPass formed a Spec Tire Committee to evaluate and select a spec tire for the 2006 season of backyard karting and beyond. The Spec Tire Committee evaluated dozens of tires from no-name to household name brands before selecting Maxxis as the official tires. Criteria for the selection included physical properties such as rubber compound, tire size, performance, wear characteristics, availability and price. The selection of the Maxxis HG3 compound was the result of the Spec Tire Committee’s search for a high quality, affordable tire that competitors could run on a variety of surfaces, including dirt and asphalt.

For the 2006 season, GrassPass competitors will be able to select from six sizes of Maxxis HG3 compound tires, including four sizes for 5" diameter wheels and two sizes for 6" diameter wheels. New rules added to the GrassPass Suggested Rules for Backyard Karting allow competitors to mix and match sizes in order to arrive at the best performance for the individual driver and kart, while prohibiting tire cutting and chemical or mechanical tire softeners or "preps."

GrassPass was formed in 2004 to create a nationwide network of backyard kart tracks, all using a common set of preparation rules. GrassPass has seen exponential growth in the number of compliant tracks in the past year and expects growth to accelerate further in 2006. GrassPass also hosts Kartstock, the Backyard Karting National Championship event, at which a Backyard Karting National Champion is crowned. Daniel Rutan was crowned 2005 Backyard Karting National Champion at the October 24th event when he beat 26 of the country’s best backyard karters in a 50 lap championship race held at the Lone Wolf circuit in Winthrop, CT.
